Austell Intermediate Earns Top Finish
The team of third grader Mackenzie Barber and fourth grader Jennifer Diaz placed seventh out of 21 schools in the Science Olympiad.
From Austell Intermediate:
Aspiring scientists from 21 Cobb elementary schools competed in the Science Olympiad on March 3.
Austell Intermediate sent 10 third, fourth and fifth graders to compete in 16 events. Each student was assigned to become an expert on three of the 16 events. The events varied from knowledge-based tests, to rocket and pasta bridge-building, to mystery events where students made impromptu creations.
To prepare for the event, students met each Friday and worked through various activities.
Fifth grade teacher Leila Barber leads the group with help from teachers Mrs. Kirkpatrick, Mrs. Owens, Mrs. Meehan, and parent volunteer Mrs. Caruthers. The students also took notes, researched, and reviewed at home.
The Austell team made a great showing at the Olympiad. The Tree and Leaf finder group of third grader Mackenzie Barber and fourth grader Jennifer Diaz placed seventh out of 21 schools. Congratulations to all of the Austell Science Olympiad Team members and coaches.
