Battery Project Takes Student to the Top

Austell Intermediate's Jordan Careathers attributes his awesomeness to being creative, curious and a good listener.

Whiz Kid: Jordan Careathers, 9 years old

School/Church: Austell Intermediate, New Mountain Top Baptist Church

Accomplishments:

  • Received first place in the Cobb County Science Fair for fourth grade for his project, "Are Name Brand Batteries Better Than Store Brand Batteries?"
  • Competed on the Austell Intermediate 2011 Science Olympiad team in three events
  • Competed on New Mountain Top's Truth & Training team in the 2011 AWANA Bible Quiz Bowl
  • Honor Roll and Perfect Attendance recipient.

Key to Awesomeness: "My key to awesomeness is being creative, curious and a good listener. I am a very respectful, attentive and hard-working student. I really think learning is fun, and I go to school everyday with a positive attitude and ready to learn. I have a big interest in science and love to do experiments. As soon as I heard about the Science Fair, I knew I wanted to be involved, even though I was not receiving a grade. I was so happy and excited when my name was called for first place at the county-wide Science Fair—now that was awesome!"

Jordan's response via his mom...In three tests, the name brand batteries did not outlast the store brand by too much. Duracell, Energizer, Walgreen's and Kroger AA alkaline batteries were tested in incandescent bulb flashlights. Duracell lasted about 30min longer than the other batteries all 3 X's. Kroger store brands batteries that cost about 2 bucks less came in 2nd all 3 X's. The Energizer and Walgreen's were 3rd & 4th. But only 20min to 30min separated the batteries. I kept my flashlights on continuously, but for longer life, power off when not in use. When the device is powered off the batteries go through a recycle period.

Hi Jordan. Great work on your battery experiment. I wanted you to know that I actually used the findings from your tests to make battery purchases for my flashlights. Your work was really valuable to me.

Keep up the good work, you are doing great!
