Editor's Note: Patch reporter Carolyn Cunningham participated in the volunteer project described below.
This Community Makeover project was one of about 100 done Friday through Sunday across five counties performed by 110 churches and 12,000 volunteers.
One volunteer said on Friday that she learned she was cancer free after having had a double mastectomy. Before that, she learned she had fibromyalgia, leaving her in pain, tired and depressed.
She said the cancer has been used "by God" to be a blessing, awakening her to the fact that she may not have long and she does not need to spend the time she has left pitying herself. Instead she needs to be grateful and giving—her reason for volunteering for the first time with Community Makeover and offering to help on an ongoing basis with organizing the school's Clothes Closet.
