Recall Issued for Iams Dog Food

The product may contain levels of a by-product that is harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities, Procter & Gamble says.

Procter & Gamble has issued a recall for different sizes of its bags of Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food with "Use By" or expiration dates of Feb. 5-6, 2013.

The seven-, eight-, and 17.5-pound bags may contain aflatoxin levels that are above the acceptable limit, according to a news release. The product has been taken off Georgia shelves, as well as several other states along the eastern coast.

No illnesses have been reported, and no other Iams products are involved, the release says.

Anyone who already purchased the dog food should throw it away and call 866-908-1569 for a replacement voucher.

The release describes aflatoxin as "a naturally occurring by-product from the growth of Aspergillus flavus and can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities. Pets which have consumed this product and exhibit symptoms of illness including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, or diarrhea should be seen by a veterinarian."
