Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

It’s Brendan Fraser out, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, a 3-D sequel to the 2008 version of Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Johnson fills Fraser’s void as Hank, the stepdad, while Josh Hutcherson reprises his role as Sean.

Also jumping into the action and adventure are Luis Guzman as Gabato the helicopter pilot and Vanessa Hudgens as his feisty daughter, Kailani. Michael Caine chimes in as the grandfather.

Like Journey to the Center of the Earth, Journey 2 is based on a story by the great Jules Verne.

The premise of the film is pretty basic. Young Sean intercepts a distress signal in the South Pacific. They head out to help and encounter a rainbow-filled island where evolutionary animals have gone crazy—all in 3-D.

Unfortunately, the film is rarely funny, and the actors were sort of sleepwalking through their roles. I don't think Jules Verne, if he were alive today, would care much for what they did with his story.

You could enjoy the film without any sound. The 3-D and other technologies make this film fun.

So the flick-o-meter gives Journey 2: The Mysterious Island three out of five.
