One thousand dollars seems like a wad of cash that, in spite of the rising costs of everything, will still last a while.

By while, I don't mean one night. But it seems for the average teen, no expense must be spared for a few hours of high school Americana.

The average price tag attached to an American teen going to prom this year is $1,078, according to a Visa Inc. survey featured in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. That's up more than $200 from last year's average of $807, the newspaper says.

I'm going to be blunt: I don't think there's any never-can-get-back night—especially one not only in your own country, but also in your backyard—worthy of a grand.

But I am but one opinion, and I want more.

How much did you spend on prom? Is there such a thing as too much for the capstone social event of high school? Tell us in the comments below. Or share what’s on your mind and start a different discussion.

That sounds about right to me. Tux - $200, Prom Tickets - $180, Dinner - $75, Coursage - $40, Ride to Prom - $500 = $995. Paid for all of this so my son would have wonderful memories of Prom night for years to come :)

Oh wow, you're are a very kind father, Nick. Do you think some companies that depend on prom hike their prices during the prom season?
