Powder Springs Fireworks Still on Schedule

If tonight's show downtown is canceled, it'll be because lightning is causing unsafe conditions, and officials will make the call right before the scheduled time.

Updated 8:20 p.m.

We're less than two hours away from the Fourth of July fireworks show in downtown Powder Springs, and it appears all the rain has moved on. The show is scheduled for dark or about 9:45 p.m.

What appears to be thousands are walking around the downtown area, enjoying live music, food and activities.

Original Report

Light showers have been passing through Powder Springs during the city's 17th annual Independence Day Celebration.

But that hasn't scared off a crowd of a few hundred from coming downtown for the festivities that began at 4 p.m., which include food, live music and children's activities.

The fireworks that are set to begin at dark (about 9:45 p.m.) are still on schedule and won't be canceled by light rain. Only heavy rain mixed with lightning will force the show to be canceled for safety reasons, police said.

The decision to cancel will be made right before the show, they said. The fireworks would then be moved to Powder Springs Day on Oct. 8.

I just got home from watching the fireworks. We were going to park in the Publix parking lot, but it was packed as was every parking lot on that road. I ended up pulling into a space that happened to be right in front of where the fireworks were going off. I thought they were pretty awesome until I just got home and turned on CBS and I am watching the fireworks from Boston! But it was still nice.
