Should School Admins Be Allowed to Be Armed?

State Rep. Paul Battles, R-Cartersville, has introduced legislation that would give school systems in Georgia the option of arming and training an administrator in each school. Tell us what you think about Battles’ proposal.

As states and communities across the country try to think of ways to prevent another shooting like Sandy Hook in Newtown, Conn., a Bartow County lawmaker has introduced legislation that would allow school administrators to carry a gun.

Introduced by State Rep. Paul Battles, R-Cartersville, the proposed amendment to firearms statutes would allow boards of education the option of arming and training administrators for each school in the system.

Designated administrators would be allowed to carry firearms within a school safety zone or school building, at a school function, or on school property or on a bus or other transportation furnished by the school. The bill is attached to this article.

I'm all for it. Responsible adults who are willing to go through proper training should be allowed to carry at school. I think it will increase the likelihood of being able to stop a threat quicker, should one arise.

i have no doubt Del is right. If only one thos
e brave souls in Sandy had a handgun the

Why are politicians discussing gun control when even the bumper-sticker industry has concluded that guns don't kill people?

Interesting that the right is always bad mouthing teachers and calling them incompetent - and now they should carry guns. The NRA has hoodwinked normal gunowners and sportsmen. Right to bear arms - of course. Right for assault weapons and large magazines - not so much. The NRA is a lobby for gun manufactures and have brainwashed the gun owners. Do people recall that we used to have the right for machine guns. So many people were being killed they banned them. NO ONE NEEDS A LARGE MAGAZINE AND ASSAULT WEAPONS. THEY ARE KILLING MACHINES NOT FOR HUNTING OR SPORTS.

Seriously? I'm sorry, but I've been privileged enough to get to know some of the teachers my kids have had over the years (oldest graduating HS now) - I can count on one hand which ones I would trust with a weapon..
Assault weapons have no business being in the hands of the general population - military and police only. NO rational civilian needs a 30 round magazine clip..

The NRA is voicing the minds of free Americans. Not entirely but mostly. Not brainwashed Zombies but logical thinking God and Country loving Americans who adore the kids in school and want them protected. It is not unusual that the sheep often hate the sheepdog and his aggrivating ways.

Absolutely not. No. No way. Even armed guard(s) in Columbine didn't solve the issue. More guns in schools is not the answer.

What happens when a gang of thugs come into a town and using their "illegal" "assault weapons" have a large gun fight. First off, tens to guns reds of people are dead. Then cops come and kill the bad guys. What do you people, by you people I'm referring to the vast majority of those thinking rifles and pistols are "assault weapons," think will happen next? Well that ban didnt work, let's ban all guns!

Second, please someone explain to me what an assault weapon is? I can refer to te dictionary on Merriam-Webster.com for this: any various automatic or semiautomatic firearms. What happens when I go and get a bow/arrow or crossbow? Can I not kill people with those? Let's make it easier, can I not go to home depot and get a gas power nail gun with large gauge nails?

The entire world needs to realise that times have changed and they have raised wimps. Start discipling your children and teach them that they can't just get guns and kill people, that's its really "not okay."

Anyway, I say any teacher than wants to bear the burden of having to save thousands of lives in an emergencies has a right to do so. My kids know guns, they know not to touch them, and they know they will kill people of they do. Oh by the way my oldest is 7..

by definition, all guns are assault weapons, but I am speaking strictly about assault rifles and pistols - an assault rifle is a military rifle that utilizes an intermediate to high-power cartridge, and that generally is capable of full-automatic fire with modifications — that is, a machine gun — or burst capable, where a burst of several rounds is fired when the trigger is pulled one time.. An assault pistol follow the same parameters, high capacity cartridge with the capacity to be converted to full auto..

The most popular "sporting" rifle in america is the AR-15... guess what was used in Newtown? AR-15 Guess what was used by the Washington sniper? AR-15... Guess what was used in the Colorado theater shooting (until it jammed)? AR-15... Guess what was used in Columbine (among others)? TEC-9 pistol... Guess what guns are semi-automatic, but capable of being modified to fully automatic? Guess what gun has high capacity cartridge options? These are military use weapons, sold in modified form for civilian use..

No one had advocated banning all things that can kill people - including handguns, shotguns, rifles, crossbows, knives, and nail guns. In fact, handguns were explicitly protected in 2008 and 2010 by the Supreme Court of the United States for use not connected with a militia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_of_Columbia_v._Heller.

Rant, If you don't know what an assault weapon is, you probably shouldn't be in this conversation. What an idiotic comparison you make-- You won't be able to kill a classroom full of students with your bow/crossbow or your gun nail. And do you sincerely believe that parents who discipline their children (as most do) are guaranteed that that child won't become a mass murderer? You people who don't support bans on assault weapons/ammo are the most selfish bunch I've ever heard--it doesn't matter to you what atrocities are reaped from such weapons, as long as YOU can possess the weapon of your choice. Nobody is suggesting prying your gun from your cold dead hands, but as a civilized society, we have an obligation to make it as difficult as possible for these mass murders to continue.

You say intermediate to high powered cartridges, do you know what the military uses? A smaller version of the m16, the a4 carbine with a .223 round. Go to the store and check out rounds for a 308 rifle, then YouTube some videos on the fastest bolt action rifles being used.

Next point that doesn't matter?

I'm just spit-balling here, but the diameter of the round does not solely determine the power. The power comes from all that powder in the back end. Actually, I'm not spit-balling, that's true. But hey, we're playing the semantic game and not discussing the topic.

The more important quantification should be the lethality of the weapon/bullet system anyway. Military style ammo is often engineered for higher lethality by optimizing a number of things, including penetration, velocity, accuracy, mass, deformation on impact, and so on. Neatly designed to reach the target through obstacles and maintain lethality at the target.

Nail gun idea is actually a great one..I think if administration wants to voluntarily train to carry weapons it should be an option. However, I do not think it should be forced upon anyone. School staff is their to make sure our kids get an education. I do think a volunteer system of trained individuals should be looked at too. I honestly think that many parents of school age children would proud to volunteer. The strictest of background checks and training being provided of course. JMO

Unfortunately, there are many truths to both sides of these stories.

I have a problem with administrators carrying firearms in a school. They are forever having little things taken from their purses when not paying attention. Just think about them having a handgun.

If they are to have something like that, it must be on their person in a holster, not in a drawer or purse.

I also prefer that a person with not only the training have a handgun but experience. Take, for example, New York City's Finest. Recently, they were involved in a shootout. They shot several bystanders as they emptied their firearms. And these are our well trained people.

The only people that should carry a handgun in a school is either a former military member or former police officer.

In the state of Georgia, there are enough of either who are retired that would be willing to volunteer to provide this service that the cost should be minimal.

Put them through a refresher course, deputize them and put them to work

If elemental schools should admins be allowed to be armed, then, how about middle schools/high schools/colleges/universities? If all schools need to be armed, then, how about cinemas/theaters? If all cinemas/theaters need to be armed, then, how about malls/stores? ... Have you ever thought that the greeting word “Hello/Hi” would be changed into “Have you brought your gun with you?” someday in the future? Have you ever thought our country name “the United States”, which we are proud of, would be changed into “the Police States” or “Gun States” someday in the future in people’s hearts? Please wake up, “Gun” is a big problem that should be solved urgently since human being no any power to control people who might misuse guns.

At the latest school shooting near Bakersfield, CA on the 10th, a teacher talked the kid down after he had only shot and wounded two people.

The school security that day was unavailable since he had called in for some reason. How lucky was that teacher that he had been able to convince the gunman to stop. What if he wasn't able to stop that kid???...

What's the use of having only ONE armed security personnel on duty when even that person was unavailable for the day?

Some data for those who are too lazy to Google it or because it doesn't fit their world view.

From the UCRP (Uniform Crime Reporting Program)

Rifles are used in only 3% of all homicides.
Hammers are used in 4% of all homicides.
Knifes are used in 13% of homicides.

Also, why is the focus solely on homicides involving rifles (such as the Newtown tragedy) where 20 children were killed vs the 260 children killed in Chicago in 2011 by handguns?

Finally for those arguing that hunters don't require semi-automatic weapons, the second amendment was created to protect the rights of hunters. It was specifically included in the constitution as a check on tyranny.

1. non sequitur. You could actually get better data from the FBI if you look up "blunt objects" instead of hammers.
2a. The focus is on "assault weapons" because of the Newtown, Aurora, NY firefighter shootings, and other recent tragedies where 1 person caused a lot of trouble very quickly with 1 AR-15. That is why people are focused on them, whether banning them helps or not, that is the reason. I'm sure there are tight controls on ammonium nitrate too for some reason.
2b. Closing the private seller loophole, called the gun show loophole according to Mr. Ericsson and Boortz, could actaully help Chicago a lot because right now someone with a clean background can go out of the city and buy guns to sell in Chicago. Phil Gingrey apparently broke ranks over that one today. On top of that Handguns are explicitly protected.

3. I'm not sold on the role of the 2A as a "check on tyranny" argument. I know it's so often repeated that we assume it's true.
- SCOTUS which is composed of actual constitutional experts hasn't supported this.
- SCOTUS. The constitution says they win the interpretation arguments.
- balance of power is maintained by the 3 branches of govt.
- balance of power is maintained by States rights
- the treason clause doesn't like rebellion
- The founding fathers suppressed at least 3 rebellions that I can think of
- and then Lincoln did
- Thomas Jefferson was only 1 FF, and he there were a lot of compromises away from his often-cited, out-of-context quotes.
- When there's an actual tyrannical government forming, the independents will agree with the paranoid conspiracy theorists.

WOW!!!!!! Look at the comments!

Heard something on the radio yesterday. A black man said everytime some white folks are killed with assault weapons in a mass shooting it hits the news, but you never hear about the daily shootings and murders of black on black murders done with handguns. He said you only hear about the white people getting killed. Black people live with this everyday.

So the black man said on the radio interview on WABE 90.1 FM Friday evening.

Bruce, that's not necessarily true. I'm a white woman. I read the Atlanta Journal Constitution every day. And every day I read about shootings/killings in and around the city--usually black on black. And each time I read these things, all I can do is shake my head in sorrow. One-on-one violence is impossible for law enforcement to control.

Someone once said that if you live by the sword, you will die by the sword. We are a society based on fear of the "other" and that fear is manipulated by the gun manufacturers' lobby who only cares about making a dime at whatever expense (makes one wonder about the definition of "terrorist organization"). Gun-less and gun-controlled societies have less violence and crime--period. More guns will never and have never worked. We need to work on eliminating or regulating guns and fear.

Funny, when the government now steps in to remove firearms from a nut case who makes threatening statements on YouTube, in public, etc; some gun owners say the government had no right to exercise such an action. But yet when a person who has a history of being verbally threatening finally kills a dozen people, these same guns owners say the government should have stepped in earlier and call for mental health evaluations. See the amount of extremists who are siding with James Yeager in TN.

Here is the top line If you go out and get drunk get in your TRUCK and drive so happens you hit a school bus and kill 20 first graders is the government going to ban all trucks. Same thing with gun bans if there were no so called ar15s or any gun like them the nut that wants to take a life he or she will do it with something. For years there has been people take a 5 gallon can of gas and burn a house or something down are we going to ban gas. Come on people we all know there is no one answer to stop this and a gun ban will not do it. Yes im a grandparent and when i herd about 20 children getting taken my heart sank. I can not think what i would do if it would have been one of mine but i would not want to ban guns cause i know that will not stop the crime. Cause like i said about the drunk driver there is laws on the books not to drink and drive but every day we loose lives cause people drink and drive. So in closing i want all people to set back and think what would stop these kinds of killings. banning some guns and clips will not do it if you think it will i got a mountain in south Florida i want to sell you. Take CHRIST out of our lives and schools and we pay badly. Lets put Christ back in schools and get our children in churches and i think we can turn this back around. Amen

Yes, Christ loves guns. Put Christian prayer back in public schools and then atheists will be able to put out their materials. Then Muslims will make sure the Koran is on each desk. The courts will have to be " even-handed" with all religions. So putting your God back in public schools will allow other religions into schools. Is that what you want? My children pray at home before school. That's how I want it. I don't want my childten to be forced to pray to Mohammad. Your answer is too simplistic. And our Christian God will not prevent future shootings. But hey, let's not worry about ONE of the problems-guns.

That is say that the AR15 or whatever it was, what not used in these murders.Check it out on U tube coverage of the tragedy. Nobama's hometown of Chicago has some of the most restrictive gun control laws in the country and also has one of the highest murder rates. Law abiding folks aren't allowed to defend themselves and gangsters don't care about laws against guns. You can bet Rahmboy has armed bodyguards to protect him but he doesn't want you to be able to defend yourself. Further, their agenda isn't to keep criminals from having access to guns or to reduce the deaths these criminals cause. The agenda is to disarm you.
