Sickness. The loss of a loved one. Being alone in the early morning hours when you can't sleep.
Such struggles are what Diane Vehar encourages those who attend her "Art for Your Soul" classes to paint as backgrounds in the form of random brushstrokes going this way and that.
Then, for the foreground, she recommends a solid focal point that offers inspiration, like a cross or pink breast cancer ribbon, as well as related words—hope, faith, love.
Vehar, 55, is a Powder Springs resident, member of the West Cobb Business Association, and the sales and marketing manager for Signs & More in Cartersville. She has three children: two at Kennesaw State University and one at Harrison High School.
She lost her husband in 2010 and, after beating breast cancer, is now battling thyroid cancer.
The $30 classes help pay for Vehar's treatment. The cost includes all materials.
The classes take place at Vehar's home off Antioch Road. She plans to host them on Fridays at 7 p.m. throughout the summer, as well as sometimes on other days.
Anyone is welcome to attend, but RSVPs are required. If you're interested, email Sandy Kaechar at email@example.com or Rob DeSotoat at firstname.lastname@example.org, and they will provide the exact address of the classes. For more information, contact Kaecher at 678-492-5350.
Attendees are asked to bring a hors d'oeuvre and their preferred beverage, including wine or beer.
