The McEachern girls basketball team is perfect at 15-0 and ranked as one of the best teams in the country. But the Lady Indians aren't relishing in the now; their sights are on something they fell just short of last year: a state championship.
"If we don’t win the main game … all this doesn’t mean as much," head coach Phyllis Arthur said at Thursday's practice.
The Lady Indians lost the state championship last year to Norcross 61-36. But earlier this season, they defeated the Lady Blue Devils 55-43, the Gwinnett Daily Post reports.
ESPN puts the team at No. 4 in the country, while USA Today has them at No. 3.
McEachern is averaging 62.27 points per game, while their opponents average 39.8. The squad is led by four senior Division I recruits and six overall. They are:
- Senior Patches Roberts, 17.2 points per game (Syracuse)
- Senior Dominique Wilson, 15.3 ppg (University of Arkansas)
- Senior Destinie Gibbs, 8 ppg (Ole Miss)
- Senior Kayla Montgomery, 5 ppg (Clemson)
- Junior Mia Cooper, 5.7 ppg (verbal to the University of South Carolina)
- Freshman Te'a Cooper, 11.5 ppg (verbal to the University of North Carolina)
The Lady Indians will head to Harrison today for a 6 p.m. game. For their full schedule, click here.
