What appeared like several thousand people came out for Powder Springs' 17th annual Independence Day Celebration on Wednesday. Light rain did put a damper on things in the beginning. But the storm moved on by early evening, clearing things up for food, live music, children's activities and, of course, fireworks. You can see a video of this year's fireworks show here, and a video from last year's celebration here. Whether you attended the event or stayed at home, we want to see how you celebrated the country's independence. Submit your own photos or videos to michael.stone@patch.com for …
Right off the bat, those in West Cobb should spot the logos of Harrison, Hillgrove and McEachern high schools. What other logos can you identify?

Patch recently attended practices of the Hillgrove boys and girls basketball teams to shoot some photos. While we wish we could be there for every local team's practice, game, and championship, it's too much of an impossible task to accomplish. That's why we need your help to help show off all the talents of our great local athletes. If you or your children are on any area sports teams—whether that be for an elementary, middle or high school, or even a church or rec league—we encourage you to send your photos to powdersprings@patch.com for publication. You can also post photos, scores and …

Each person in attendance at Friday's Open Mic Night was given a ticket to write their favorite act on, and when all the votes were cast, the bluegrass music of Ron Cline and Randy Link came out on top. The pair, who took away a $100 gift card for being the top vote-getters, were among the 15 or so people who performed. Most sang and played instruments, but there was also some storytelling involved. The event, sponsored by Patch, was held at the Powder Springs Coffee and Bake Shoppe. In addition to the above photos, there is also a Youtube of several of the acts closing out the night with "I'…
After you're done checking out Teresa's shots of the Powder Springs Day fireworks, you can watch Patch's video of the event.
Friends of Shelter Animals for Cobb County transported 13 dogs from Cobb County Animal Control to a rescue group in Minnesota last Saturday. The dogs and Puppy Pipeline volunteers arrived safely on Monday, and many of the dogs transported have already been adopted. The video above is a tribute to the Cobb foster families and volunteers who nurtured the dogs, and to the Puppy Pipeline Rescue of Georgia volunteers who donated toward the dogs' transportation. For information about volunteering, visit the Friends of Shelter Animals For Cobb County website.
They'd both waited a year for this matchup. Seemingly, only one team showed up ready to play, though. South Cobb suffered its first, and worst, loss of the season to Hillgrove Friday night. Falling behind 7-0 after the opening drive, the Eagles never regained their composure. The Hawks covered half the field in two pass plays in the opening drive and capped off the drive with a score from Kenyan Drake. He finished the night with 196 yards on 18 carries and 3 touchdowns. There was more where that came from. The Eagles looked lethargic in their play the entire night—with the exception of …
With both McEachern and North Gwinnett losing in the second round of last year's state tournament, the teams were looking to get on the winning track to start the 2011 season. They met at the Corky Kell Classic in the Georgia Dome on Saturday to try to make that happen. North Gwinnett held a slim lead for most of the game and late in the fourth quarter was ahead by four, 17-13. But McEachern put together a drive in the last two minutes, and Chris Nwagbara inched the ball across the goal line with 10 seconds remaining in the game to give the Indians the lead, 20-17. The Indians then ran an …
The sound of paddles hitting the water reverberated around George Sparks Reservoir as canoers explored the lake on Friday. Each month through October, Sweetwater Creek State Park is set to host a twilight paddle. Led by interpretive ranger Don Scarbrough Jr., paddlers spend close to two hours on the water at dusk. The reservoir is 215 acres surrounded by trees and has all sorts of nooks and crannies to explore. Whether a novice or pro, the twilight paddle allows paddlers a chance to catch a different vantage point as the sun sets across the water. The cost of the paddle is $15 per person, …
Editor's Note: Patch reporter Carolyn Cunningham participated in the volunteer project described below. Hundreds converged on Compton Elementary this weekend to help clean the school inside and out as part of the the third annual Community Makeover. This Community Makeover project was one of about 100 done Friday through Sunday across five counties performed by 110 churches and 12,000 volunteers. One volunteer said on Friday that she learned she was cancer free after having had a double mastectomy. Before that, she learned she had fibromyalgia, leaving her in pain, tired and depressed. She …
Hikers can now enjoy a nighttime stroll through Sweetwater Creek State Park. Once a month, a group hike led by John Johnston, co-vice president of the Friends of Sweetwater Creek, uses candle lanterns resembling those used in the 1800s to walk the red trail leading to the Civil War-era New Manchester mill. The cotton mill was built in 1849 and later destroyed by Union soldiers led by William Tecumseh Sherman as he marched through Georgia during the Civil War in 1864. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the war. The red trail starts near the park's visitors center and travels…
