This school is named in honor of co-founder of Life of Georgia Insurance Company John Newton McEachern, who donated 240 acres in Macland. He inspired others to form the Seventh District Agricultural and Mechanical School,and  McEachern began when the college was abandoned with the creation of the state's university system. McEachern opened in 1933 with students in the first through eleventh grades. In the early 1970s, enrollment numbers had grown and first through eighth grade students were transferred to other schools. Highlights of the campus include a school museum and nature center with trails, a pond, pavilion and cottage. Home to the Indians, McEachern now educates students in grades nine through 12 and provides a number of extracurricular activities, including fine arts, sports and clubs.
