The History Corner

Wednesday, May 9: Cotton Kings

10:00 am – 11:30 am

In the years following the Civil War, as the South wearily rebuilt, a new generation of wealthy landowners began to emerge.  These were the Cotton Kings, and their lavish mansions rival the finest antebellum plantation homes.  We will journey via film first to the 30-room Swan House in Atlanta, then onto Bishop’s Palace and Moody Mansion in Galveston.  These magnificent estates range in architecture design from Palladian style to French Renaissance and Romanesque to Moorish and Tudor.  Join us for an armchair tour of some of “American’s Castles”.

Few men have changed our everyday world of work, leisure, and human communication in the way that Apple founder Steve Jobs did.  Through interviews with those who worked closely with him, this program provides new insights into what made him tick.  Also, Jobs himself expounds on his philosophy of life and offers advice on how to achieve your ambitions, desires and dreams.  Join us for a biography of a man of our time.

Short of Breath?

Shortness of breath has many causes affecting either the breathing passages and lungs or the heart or blood vessels. However, the causes fall into simple categories which we will explore as well as recommendations to relieve it.

Ice Cream and a Movie

Monday, May 21: Midnight in Paris

Starring Owen Wilson. Midnight in Paris centers on a small group of Americans visiting the French capitol for both business and pleasure. Gil, a screenwriter, is forced to confront the shortcomings of his relationship with his fiancée and their divergent goals due to his magical experiences in the city beginning each night at midnight.  At midnight, an antique car pulls up, and the passengers—dressed in 1920’s clothing—urge Gil to join them. They go to a bar, where Gil comes to realize that he has been transported to the 1920s, an era he idolizes. He encounters Alice B. Toklas, Cole Porter, Josephine Baker, and Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald, who take him to meet Ernest Hemingway. Join us for this magical film, by Woody Allen that spans time, ice cream and popcorn.

Starring:  Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer. An aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960s decides to write a book detailing the African-American maids’ points of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis.

Cost:  Free; Lunch is on your own

Join us for a day at the State Capitol with lunch on your own at Twin Towers Office Building across the street. We will meet at the Marietta Transfer Station, board Route #10 CCT bus and then transfer to a MARTA train which lets us off at the Capitol.  Use your complimentary CCT magnetic fare card and Breeze Card for a delightful day. Wear comfortable shoes as there will be lots of walking.

National Civil War Naval Museum

Wednesday, May 16

Come aboard and get the little known Navy view of the Civil War. Focusing on the themes of technology, commerce, blockade, amphibious operations and river campaigns, you will get the stories of sailors, soldiers, slaves and civilians as affected by the North and South navies.

Living with and Planning for Dementia

Dementia changes everyday tasks into great challenges for the person living with the disease, as well as for those around him/her.  Joanna Hurley, Hurley Elder Care Law, cares for her mother who was diagnosed with dementia in 2008 at age 68.  During this intimate seminar, Joanna will share tips her family has learned as well as information from the elder law world that she believes all families should know.
