Cool Down with Cool Pool Discounts

Other low-cost or free activities include two Flag Day events on Tuesday in Douglas County.

We're all watching our family budgets these days. Whether shopping with coupons or looking for two-for-one deals, we're taking advantage of all sorts of offers and savings that help us make our dollars as valuable as possible.

Here are some that will hopefully stretch your dollars to the max:

1.  Indoor and Outdoor Pools in Powder Springs

Deal: Among the most inexpensive ways not only to cool off but trim down is to visit one of the local aquatic centers or outdoor pools. Here is the fee schedule for Cobb County. For instance, the daily fee is the same whether you live in Cobb or outside the county. Prices are $3.30 for adults, $2.36 for youths (ages 2 through 17) and $2 for seniors (age 60 plus).

Individual passes also are available for 10 visits, monthly, quarterly and annually. Those living outside the county would need to pay more for the monthly, quarterly and annual passes—about $18 to $25 more in each category. Ten-visit passes are not available to non-county residents.

Whether you live inside or outside Cobb, family passes for three months cost $100 for four or less and $10 extra for each additional family member. They must be immediate family members and dependents who are living in the same household. 

Note that these fees do not include the 6 percent sales tax.

Here also is Cobb's swimwear policy. Guidelines are outlined for those who do not want to wear a traditional swimsuit due to their religious beliefs.

Hours: Tuesdays through Fridays, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Powder Springs Pool. The pool also will be closed on June 17, July 1 and Aug. 5 for county furlough days.

The West Cobb Aquatic Center will be closed on June 17, July 1 and 4, Aug. 5 and Sept. 2—all county furlough days except for the Fourth of July holiday. Open swim hours at West Cobb are Mondays through Thursdays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays, 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. but closed Sundays.

2. Dairy Queen Treats

Deal:  Brownie Batter Blizzard Treat is the "Blizzard of the Month" this month with "double-fudge brownie batter blended with real fudge brownie pieces and creamy vanilla soft serve." Ongoing specials are 2 for $3, 3 for $4 and 4 for $5 from a selected menu. A new limited-time special is $3.99 for a fourth-pound Bacon Cheddar GrillBurger with a 12-ounce milkshake.

3. National Flag Day Events in Douglas County

Deals: A free Flag Day Breakfast of pancakes will be served Tuesday from 8 to 10 a.m. at The Benton House in Douglasville. A flag dedication also will be held there.

That evening beginning at 6:45, a free Flag Day Ceremony will take place on O'Neal Plaza in downtown Douglasville "to honor the United States flag and to commemorate the flag's adoption and servicemen and women." President Harry Truman signed legislation in 1949 to designate each June 14 as National Flag Day.

4. Free Car Seat Inspection

Deal: A free car seat inspection station will be available at the Douglas County Board of Health on Wednesday. Your child car seat can be inspected for safety, fit and correct installation by a certified expert.

5. Free Friday Night Flick

Deal: "Despicable Me" (PG) will be shown for free on O'Neal Plaza in downtown Douglasville between West Broad and Church Streets. Before the movie, there will be pre-show contests and entertainment. Moviegoers are advised to bring their own seating and snacks.

No alcoholic beverages will be allowed. This event is sponsored by the Douglasville Convention and Visitors Bureau. This movie will be offered with closed captions.
