Free College Fair Set for Saturday

The third annual event will be at Lithia Springs High School's Media Center.

We're all watching our family budgets these days. Whether shopping with coupons or looking for two-for-one deals, we're taking advantage of all sorts of offers and savings that help us make our dollars as valuable as possible.

Here are some that will hopefully stretch your dollars to the max:

1. Free College Fair in Lithia Springs

Deal: This third annual event will be offered by Kaplan and sponsored by former Douglas County Commissioner Freddie Ashmon on Saturday.

2. Lunch and Learn for Free in Cobb

Deal: Cobb Master Gardeners are set to host a "Lunch and Learn" program on Friday. "New Uses for Ordinary Things in the Garden" will be presented by Cathy Lacy and Lisa Bone. Those attending should bring their own lunch.

3. Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Enrollment for Free Pizza  

Deal: Through this national reading incentive program in its 26th year, children can eat one free one-topping personal pan pizza each month for six months. Enrollment has opened for the 2011-12 school year for K-6 students and will continue through June.

The program runs Oct. 1 through March 31 for public, private, parochial and homeschool students. Teacher materials are not available at Pizza Hut locations; they must be ordered online.

All materials are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Teachers set their own reading goals for each child.  

Good through: Enrollment ends in June for the next school year (Oct. 1 through March 31)

4. Kroger Specials with Coupons 

Deal: SouthernSavers.com is a coupon site that showcases daily specials from a variety of sources. This week, Kroger has an abundance of specials good through Saturday. Specials become even more special when you use the following combination on a single item: 

  • The item is already on sale.
  • You've downloaded ecoupons to your Kroger card from Cellfire, Procter & Gamble, Kroger and Shortcuts.
  • You've clipped SmartSource and Red Plum coupons from magazine and newspaper inserts that also are doubled up to 50 cents.
  • You use Kroger paper coupons, but the "catalina" coupons on Southern Savers are not doubled.

5. Steak 'n Shake AYCE Pancakes

Deal: All-you-can-eat pancakes are offered for $3.99 from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. at  Steak 'n Shake. Other deals include half price on all shakes and drinks Monday through Friday from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The nearest Steak 'n Shake to Powder Springs is near WellStar Cobb Hospital in Austell.
