Drivers in Powder Springs will have to continue detouring around a road
undergoing construction for at least a few more days.
The portion of Powder Springs Road from Richard D. Sailors Parkway to Old Austell-Powder Springs Road had been set to open today. But drivers in the area have been greeted by signs saying the road will be closed until Friday, Aug. 23. The road has been closed since May 28 as crews replace a bridge over the Silver Comet Trail.
The road originally had been scheduled to open Aug. 6, but Powder Springs officials earlier this month told West Cobb Patch that an "unusual amount of rain days" had caused delays for the contractors working on the road. On Monday, the weather was again cited as the cause of the moved opening date.
“The contractors are working feverishly, and for no other reason than the rain are they running behind,” City Manager Brad Hulsey said.
Among those who have had to change their routes while driving in the area are the county’s school bus drivers, but Doug Goodwin, spokesman for the Cobb County School District, said the drivers’ adjusted schedules have had little significant impact on student transportation in the area. Cobb students returned to classes on Aug. 7, a day after the road’s original opening date.
