Last Chance Thrift Store Offers Deals

Owned locally by B & R Salvage, Inc., this for-profit business has five locations in metro Atlanta, including one in Lithia Springs.

We're all watching our family budgets these days. Whether shopping with coupons or looking for two-for-one deals, we're taking advantage of all sorts of offers and savings that help us make our dollars as valuable as possible.

Here are some that will hopefully stretch your dollars to the max:

1. Last Chance Thrift Storein Lithia Springs

Deal: Owned locally by B & R Salvage, Inc., this  has five locations in metro Atlanta. The company stocks each location on a daily basis by the truck load. It has more than 5,000 items of resale merchandise, providing "a large, organized selection of quality used clothing and household items in a department store setting."

B & R Salvage buys its merchandise from the Atlanta Alliance on Developmental Disabilities and from Georgia Family Support. These nonprofit organizations receive their items from donations by individuals throughout metro Atlanta neighborhoods. Any items deemed not suitable for reselling are sold to outside companies that either use the materials to manufacture other products and/or distribute the clothing to Third World countries. 

Here is a listing of weekly specials:

  • Mondays—all items are half off
  • Tuesdays—99-cent day for items marked with two color tickets
  • Wednesdays—half off for items marked with two color tickets
  • Thursdays—senior citizens (ages 55 and up) receive 30 percent off all merchandise
  • Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays—half off for items marked with two color tickets

Hours: Sunday, 12 to 6 p.m.; Monday—Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

2. Free Saturday Concert in Douglas County

Deal: A free concert will be offered in Douglasville Saturday evening by the Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County. Free parking is available nearby in business parking lots. Those attending should bring their own seating to hear the 22-piece Etowah Jazz Society.

Formed nearly a decade ago, the Cartersville-based group performs big band-era classics, jazz standards and Broadway and pop hits. Influenced by Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich, Count Basie and Tommy Dorsey, the Etowah Jazz Society is accompanied by vocalist Patty Holladay and imaginative arrangements.

The band's playlist will include Tommy Dorsey's "On the Sunny Side of the Street," Count Basie's "Fly Me to the Moon" and Stan Kenton's "Stompin' at the Savoy."

The Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County is supported by the City of Douglasville, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners and the Georgia Council for the Arts, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

3. Free Summer Reading in Douglas County

Deal: Registration opens at 9 a.m. on Tuesday for "One World, Many Stories," the children's Summer Reading Program at Douglas County and . If attending both programs, you will need to register at each library.

Good through: June 6—July 13

4. CouponMom.com

Deal: Based in Atlanta, this free website lists weekly deals by grocery stores or drugstores to help you find the best prices. Free couponing sites such as this one and SouthernSavers.com do much of the work for you. They show you which newspaper circular or other location (Facebook, for example) to find your coupons so that you only need to clip the coupons you actually will use.

 

5. Free Movies Nearby

Deals: Movies 278 in nearby Hiram has two specials arriving this week. Beginning Friday, the extra charge for 3D movies will be reduced from $3 to $1 before 6 p.m. and to $2 after 6 p.m. as an ongoing special.

Then Tuesday, the Family Fun Festival will begin with free movies through Aug. 11. Also, if you bring an unexpired can of food or a school supply costing at least 50 cents, you receive free popcorn (only one per person). Otherwise, there are $1 specials for popcorn and drinks. All movies are rated G or PG.
