Market Welcomes Bluegrass Band

Monthly live entertainment is something new to the Powder Springs Farmers Market this year, with The Mars Hill Porch Pickers being the first to perform.

The Mars Hill Porch Pickers serenaded attendees of the on Thursday with traditional sounds of the South mixed with music from England and Ireland to create a classic bluegrass sound.

The band was the first in a new feature of the market: live entertainment on the last Thursday of every month.

Kim Peterson, an employee of the city’s  office and the market’s coordinator, said for the August performance, she hopes to coordinate a drumline competition between the and marching bands.

"We're going to try to set that up, but I can't promise anything yet," she said.

Mars Hill's Painter Dixon Lester, who is also a member of the Southeast Bluegrass Association, said he encourages people to help promote bluegrass by attending the weekly Tuesday night jams at the Australian Bakery in Marietta Square. Anyone is welcome to come, he said.
