3. Free Cat Adoptions, a $125 Savings

Deal: Good Mews Animal Foundation, a non-profit, no-kill cat shelter in Marietta, will hold free cat adoptions on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Good Mews’ “Let’s Hear it for the Boys!” weekend will feature male cats over 9 months of age. The event is part of the national Fresh Step/The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Fee-Waived Cat Adoption Campaign and in support of National Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month.

As with all Good Mews cats, these special, fee-waived, micro-chipped cats have been neutered and have received their necessary vaccinations.

The regular adoption fee is $125. Although the adoption fee is waived during the promotional weekend, all other adoption policies remain in effect.

Good Mews adoption counselors conduct vigorous interviews with potential adopters to ensure a suitable fit for both human and feline. In partnership with the ASPCA, Good Mews is one of only two area shelters to participate in the “Meet Your Match” program, which establishes a personality profile for each cat so that adopters can determine if the cat is a good fit for their household.

Good Mews was modeled after Tree House, a no-kill, cage-free shelter in Chicago.  Its founder, Gloria Skeen, started Good Mews in her Atlanta townhouse in 1988 to provide an alternative to shelters that euthanized unwanted cats. A 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, Good Mews was the first no-kill, free-roam, feline-only shelter established in Georgia, housing approximately 100 cats at any given time, with an additional 30-plus cats living in foster homes.

Good Mews offers an alternative to traditional animal shelters in the metro Atlanta area by providing a no-kill, cage-free haven for homeless, abused or abandoned cats until placing them in permanent, loving homes. Since 1988, Good Mews has placed more than 5,000 cats in permanent homes.

The shelter receives no government support, relying instead on donations of time, service, supplies and money from its supporters.
