Rescheduling Expected for Fireworks

The display at the 16th annual Independence Day Celebration was cancelled because of rain Monday night.

The rocket's red glare will still be seen over Powder Springs.

The city is planning to reschedule the fireworks show that was planned for Monday night but hasn't yet decided on a date, said Kim Peterson with .

“It’s not going to be tomorrow or this weekend; it’s going to be something in the future," she said.

The storms on Monday started about 7:30 p.m., forcing the huge crowd to take shelter wherever available.

The $10,000 fireworks contract has an inclement weather portion, calling for an additional 15 percent in the event of a weather cancellation and the need to do the show at a later date.

The rescheduled event, Vaughn said, will be more than just fireworks.

“We’ll plan an event; we won’t do just fireworks," she said. "It will probably not be the magnitude of the Fourth of July, but it will certainly be a nice event."

“The lemonade side of this," she added, "is the citizens have something to look forward to. And we truly needed the rain."

Currently, Vaughn said, the city is eyeing either September or October as possibilities for the rescheduled event.

The only other time the Independence Day Celebration has been rained out was in 2001, the mayor said. “We have truly been blessed” only to have two weather cancellations, she added.

That event was rescheduled for September but was pushed to Veterans Day after the Sept. 11 attacks, Vaughn said.
