The Weekender: Smyrna Heroes Gala Saturday

Here's a roundup of weekend events throughout Cobb, including an Elton John tribute band concert, historical presentations and a gala.

Friday

Life is Sweet 
What: This is a fundraising event to assist cancer patients and their families financially and to empower them through support and education to make their journey a little easier. There will be raffles, silent auctions, blackjack, roulette and a cash bar.

When: 6 p.m.
Cost: Free!

What: Atlanta-based, nationally acclaimed Elton John tribute artist Craig A Meyer, returning home from a ten-month, nationwide tour in locales from Niagara Falls to Honolulu, announces his ultimate concert of the season, an end of summer blowout to be held September 7 at the Mable House Barnes Theater in Cobb County, where he resides.

Cost: Tickets are $16 and can be purchased online.

Civil War Roundtable of Cobb County 
What: Dr. Richard McMurray, noted scholar, lecturer, professor and author, will be the featured speaker and will give a presentation on The Common Soldier During the Civil War. CWRTCC is now 140+ members strong and the public is invited to these informative and educational forums where noted Civil War historians are featured speakers.  First time visitors are free - annual membership is open for a minimal fee.

Saturday

Paws and Planes Festival 
What: Come out and help Kicks 101.5, The Atlanta Blue Notes Big Band, and Spiff Carner support the Homeless Pets Foundation and the Marietta Museum of History at this unique festival. Entertainment, vendors, children's activities, pet adoptions, tours of military and commercial aircraft, and helicopter rides (for an additional fee). The Marietta Fire Department will also be out with one of their special trucks.  Friendly, well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

Cost: Adults $10; children 12 and under free

What: Fall Fashion Show will showcase children from 8 to 16 modeling garments that they have made. In addition the show will feature a juried show representing all aspects of garments sewn by members of the Atlanta Chapter of the American Sewing Guild. Fall market will include sewn craft items including: quilts, handbags, fabric bowls, American Girl clothes and embroidery lace.

What: Created by the Kennesaw State University Public History and German Studies Programs and the Ravensbrück Memorial Site, Remembering Ravensbrück tells the story of the Nazi concentration camp where more than 150,000 women were interred. The exhibition focuses on the history of the camp, from its beginning in 1939 to its liberation in 1945, and highlights the stories of individual women - women who suffered in and survived the camp but also of female guards who willingly implemented the Nazi Final Solution.

Smyrna Heroes Gala 
What: Support Smyrna’s public safety officers while you eat food from local restaurants, sip signature cocktails and listen to live performances by Wesley Cook and Kingsized. Vacations, fine art and gift baskets available for live and silent auction.
Where:3180 Atlanta Rd SE, Smyrna
When: 7 p.m.

Sunday

Taylor-Brawner House Book Signing 
What: After several years of research, the Taylor-Brawner House Foundation historian, Mike Terry has published a book about the Taylor and Brawner families and the famous Brawner Hospital.  This is a must-read for anyone interested in local history and will be available at a book signing on Sept. 9th at the restored 1890 house located at 3184 Atlanta Road.  All proceeds benefit the foundation.
Where: 3180 Atlanta Rd SE, Smyrna
When: 1 p.m.
Cost: Admission is free. Copies of the book will be available for $25.
