UPDATE: Howell Mill Road at 14th Reopened

Road damage near busy intersection had led to its closure by city crews on Tuesday night

Update: 11/22/12 11 p.m.

The busy stretch along Howell Mill Road was reopened late Wednesday night by city crews who spent the day examining the problem and temporarily fixing the sinkhole. The cause has yet to be determined and crews expect to return Monday to continue further permanent repairs.

Original Story:

Concerns over sinking ground near a bridge on Atlanta’s westside led crews Tuesday evening to close a portion of Howell Mill Road between 14th Street and Huff Road.

All lanes of the road going over the railroad tracks at the intersection have been closed to vehicular traffic until a bridge inspector can look at the road, which appeared to be sinking several inches.

A representative of the city’s Department of Watershed Management said a leak has damaged the bridge, but the source of the leak is still in question. Crews are expected to continue their investigation early Wednesday morning.

Atlanta Police Sgt. Greg Lyon said motorists could expect delays in the already congested area on Wednesday morning. Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes to reach their destinations.

Detour Routes include:

Option 1, SB on Howell Mill, turn left on 17th Street, right on Northside
Drive, right on 14th Street, left on Howell Mill

Option 2, SB on Howell Mill, right on Huff Road, left on Marietta Boulevard,
left on W Marietta Street, right on Howell Mill

NB on Howell Mill, right on 14th, left on Northside Drive, left on 17th
Street, right on Howell Mill

Drivers attempting to turn right onto Howell Mill from 14th Street:

Left on Howell Mill, left on 10th, left on Northside Drive, left on 17th and
right on Howell Mill

Pedestrian traffic only allowed on west side of the street.

Huff Road is open to traffic. Access is allowed for local traffic only,
businesses between Howell Mill and Huff Road.

The area affected is where the Westside Provisions District (WSPD) is located, but its retail stores and restaurants will remain open for business as usual despite the closure.

Entrances open:

· Huff Road by Figo and the Huff Road entrance by Anthropologie

· 14th Street entrance to the parking deck

· Brady Avenue entrance (by West Egg)

The Howell Mill entrances north of 14th Street and south of Huff Road are temporarily closed. WSPD has hired off-duty police and private security to help direct traffic and ensure the easiest possible access to the affected north end of the district.

Please check with Patch and at the WSPD website for updates.
