Library to Host Job Seminars

The Georgia Department of Labor will offer advice during the free events in Powder Springs every Tuesday in October.

Job searching is one of the main reasons that local residents use the these days. That’s why Branch Manager Bruce Thompson said he wanted to host an employment seminar to help those who are looking for work.

“People come to use their laptop computers here and also to use our landline computers searching for work or doing their distance education,” he said. “There are quite a lot of people who are trying to educate themselves so they can be more competitive in the job market.”

The library is partnering with the Georgia Department of Labor for a series of seminars that will be held every Tuesday in October. This week's seminar will focus on navigating the job search, and a labor department specialist will share expertise in how to search for jobs

“We’re always looking for different ways to help people find work,” said Julia Huprich, digital services librarian. “We know it’s a huge lead in the community.”

Huprich said residents regularly go to the library to use its resources and to get help with creating their resumes.

“We’re asked all the time, 'Can you help me build my resume? Is the formatting right? How does it look?'” she said. “This is a huge need in the community.”

The seminars begin each Tuesday at 11 a.m. On Oct. 11, the seminar will be geared toward education and training, and will include benefits that the labor department either facilitates or directs people toward.

The seminar on Oct. 18 will teach participants how to use social media websites such as LinkedIn and Facebook to connect with potential employers.

“I’ve noticed in my own work here at the library that there are plenty of people who are forced to get into the digital age,” Thompson said. “They have to be more text-heavy than they have previously been comfortable with.”

The final seminar will delve into employee rights and benefits, such as what rights are mandated and what employees are entitled to. Labor department employees also will share resources that are available to local residents.

“I know there are all kinds of resources that the labor department has that people are not aware of,” Thompson said. “I oftentimes look over peoples’ shoulders and see them about to pay for something the state offers for free, such as credit reports.”

There is no charge to attend the seminars, and registration is not required. For more information, call 770-439-3600 or go online to www.cobbcat.org.
