Powder Springs Voters OK Sunday Alcohol

With 62 percent of citizens casting their ballots in favor today, the sales will go into effect as soon as the tally is certified by Cobb the Board of Elections & Registration.

Alcohol bottles didn't exactly have a clear path to Sunday shelves in Powder Springs before receiving majority support from voters today.

The City Council , with Councilwoman Rosalyn Neal saying, "If they want to buy liquor, they can do it on Saturday."

But following November's elections, when many municipalities and counties across Georgia , the council brought the issue up again. , with Councilwoman Nancy Hudson opposed.

"For me to be true to my religious and moral beliefs and after seeing what the effects and consequences of alcohol can do to an individual and families, I cannot with a good conscious give my vote to the Sunday sale of alcohol," she said immediately before the council vote in November.

The reason in the change of heart from June to November: "At the last election, we did have a lot of citizens that showed up to vote on this issue and wanted to know why we had not given them the choice," Mayor Pat Vaughn previously said.

, it appears the sales will help—or at least not hurt—convenience and grocery stores simply because the items are already on the shelves. All they have to do now is flip on the lights to the beer coolers and allow wine sales.

Liquor store owners, however, will now have to pay the expenses of being open an extra day, with several owners in neighboring communities over seven days instead of six.

Gov. Nathan Deal’s inauguration last year removed a key barrier for Sunday sales—the opposition of predecessor Sonny Perdue—and the General Assembly passed S.B. 10 to let localities decide for themselves.

With today's public vote of 986 (62 percent) for and 605 (38 percent) against, package alcohol sales will be permitted between 12:30 and 11:30 p.m. on Sundays in Powder Springs. The new law will go into effect as soon as the Board of Elections & Registration certifies the vote totals.

, and also approved Sunday alcohol today.

Indiana and Connecticut are the only states left that still ban Sunday sales completely.
