Slight Chance of rain, Police Chief Update and More

Here's everything you need to know today, June 2, 2011.

1) Powder Springs council members will be interviewing police chief candidates today, said Mayor Pat Vaughn. Candidates will then have a chance to mingle with residents at a meet-and-greet before a finalist is selected, she said. Former Chief L. Rick Richardson earlier this year following an investigation into the improper sale of a police car to another town.

2) Don't forget that today marks the first day of the season for the from 4 to 8 p.m. at 4488 Pineview Drive.

3) The weather today is more of the same wih a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms, a high near 94 and a low of 66, according to the National Weather Service.

4) South Cobb Arts Alliance is sponsoring the Summer Candlelite Concert Series at Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre. The scheduled performances are: Delta Moon, Saturday, June 18; Roxie Watson Saturday, Aug. 20; Kayla Taylor Jazz, Saturday, Sept. 10; and Blair Crimmins and the Hookers, Saturday, Oct. 15.

Gates open at 7 p.m. and the shows start at 8 p.m. Parking and general admission are free to all performances. Attendees may bring their own food and beverages, and concessions will be open. Tables that seat four are available for $50 for a single concert of $225 for the entire season. To reserve a table, call 770-819-3285. Mable House is located at 5239 Floyd Road, Mableton.

5) Parents looking for something different for their middle schoolers to do this summer should consider the paper sculpture camp for ages 11-13 at the Art Station-Big Shanty, 2050 Kennesaw Due West Road, Kennesaw. The camp will be held 1:30-4:30 p.m., June 6-10.

Participants will learn about several paper sculpture artists during the unique camp. Instructor Alexandra Hart has a background in industrial architecture and knowledge of how to use paper to make and build in 3-D. For more information, call 770-514-5930.
