The Day After: Storm Damage 'Minimal'

Following yesterday's heavy rain and tornado warnings, officials in Cobb and Douglas didn't have anything major to report.

The day after the constant rain and tornado warnings, there didn’t appear to be any significant damage in Powder Springs or Lithia Springs.

“We dodged the bullet obviously,” Powder Springs City Manager Rick Eckert said, adding that any damage he was aware of was “minimal.”

The streets in and around Powder Springs were cluttered with small debris, and a few trees were down along Moon Road and near the intersection of Friendship Church Road and Villa Rica Road.

A crew was working this morning to clear a tree from the yard of a house near the intersection. Some branches put a few small holes in the home’s roof, but the homeowner said overall he was “very lucky.”

Cobb County police spokesman Mike Bowman said “nothing out of the ordinary” happened during or after the storm.

“It was business as usual,” he said.

Bowman said this morning, he inspected the area where a tornado near and wasn’t able to find any damage.

For Lithia Springs and the rest of Douglas County, “we got very lucky,” county spokesman Wes Tallon said.

Three tornado warnings were issued, but as far as Tallon could tell, no funnel clouds touched down.

Doppler radar indicated that “three tornadoes came up and over us,” he said.

National Weather Service employees were inspecting areas for possible touchdowns this morning and will have a press conference at 2 p.m. in Canton to release their findings.

Today’s forecast shows rain or drizzling continuing until 2 p.m., followed by chances for showers until 8 a.m. Wednesday.
