Those wanting to participate should have their applications turned in at the station before the Aug. 14 start date.

By Powder Springs Police

Beginning Aug. 14, the will be hosting a 10-week Citizen Police Academy.

Most classes will held between 6 and 8 p.m. on Tuesdays.

The Citizen Police Academy provides an opportunity for citizens to learn firsthand about police operations. Through a series of lectures, field trips and simulated activities, citizens are provided training similar to that of an actual police officer.

The academy benefits the community and the department because it builds relationships and creates a group of citizens that are better informed about the reality of police work.

The curriculum includes criminal law, patrol procedures, mock trial, accident reconstruction, criminal investigations, crime scene processing, defensive tactics and more.

Citizens will also have the opportunity to attend Glock firearms training and a chance to ride along with an officer on patrol.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and pass a criminal background check.

Classes are held at the at 1114 Sailors Parkway.
