Ash Wednesday Service and Imposition of the Ashes at Clarkdale United Methodist Church

Celebrate the Lenten Season at Clarkdale United Methodist Church.

Clarkdale United Methodist Church celebrates the beginning of the Lenten Season on Wednesday, Feb. 13, with Ash Wednesday Service in the Clarkdale UMC Sanctuary at 7 p.m. The Sanctuary will be open to the public on Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 11 a.m. until noon for the Imposition of the Ashes.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs 40 days before Easter (Sundays do not count). According to the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry, during which he endured temptation by Satan. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of this 40-day liturgical period of prayer and fasting.

Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of believers as a reminder and celebration of human mortality, and as a sign of mourning and repentance to God. The ashes used are typically gathered after the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday are burned. Come and join us at Clarkdale UMC for this powerful and moving experience.
