Boy Scouts Help with Field of Flags

Powder Springs Boy Scouts from Troop #1294 were on hand to assist with preparing the 9/11 flags for pick up at the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.

The Kiwanis Club of Marietta commemorated the tenth anniversary of 9/11 with a Field of Flag installation in the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. One flag was placed in honor of each life lost that day. Nearly 3,000 flags were flown in honor of the 9/11 victims.

After a week, the flags were taken down, and those who sponsored a flag were able to pick them up. Powder Springs Boy Scouts from Troop #1294 were on hand to assist with preparing the flags for pick up. The boys helped by folding the flags.

Traditional flag etiquette requires that before an American flag is stored or presented, it be folded in half lengthwise two times and then into triangle folds eleven times.

When picking up their flags, sponsors could choose between a folded flag or one still on a pole. However, most took folded flags. They also received a certificate of sponsorship along with their flag. Of the nearly 3,000 flags, over half of them were folded into the neat triangle bundle.

Community service is a large part of the Boy Scout program. Six Boy Scouts from Troop #1294 gave up their Saturday to help fold flags. The troop meets at American Legion Post #294 in Powder Springs.
