Evelyn Newton Dies at 89

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory.

Evelyn Newton, an 89-year-old Powder Springs woman, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home, with Dr. Richard Walker officiating. Interment will follow at Kennesaw Memorial Park in Marietta.

Evelyn and her twin sister, Ella, were born to parents James Luther Sr. and Erma Carter in Woodstock in 1922. Ella died shortly after childbirth. Evelyn’s other sister, Christine, and brothers, Harley, Aaron, Hubert and Charles, preceded her in death.

Evelyn and her husband, James Carl Newton, a World War II Navy veteran, lived happily together for 59 years prior to his passing in 2000. Evelyn was an active member of Noonday Baptist Church, where she taught young children in Sunday school classes.

She worked as a volunteer at Kennestone Hospital and the school lunch programs at Sedalia Park Elementary and Sprayberry High School.

Evelyn is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Candy Newton; brother and sister-in-law, Luther and Geraldine Carter; grandchildren, Kellie Kimble and David Newton; and great-grandchildren, Melanie Dean and Tristan DiCarlo; in addition to many beloved nieces and nephews.
