Firefighters had an early morning chimney fire on Lewis Road in Powder Springs under control within 20 minutes of their arrival.

One fireman was taken to the hospital because of chest pains and was still there having tests done as of 1 p.m., said Denell Boyd, a spokeswoman for Cobb Fire & Emergency Services.

Seven fire vehicles and 19 personnel responded to the fire at 4980 Lewis Road next to the intersection of Hiram-Lithia Springs Road.

The cause was fire escaping through the chimney chase, Boyd said. Damage was to done to the attic, but the majority of the house was unaffected, she added.

Boyd emphasized the importance of having chimneys inspected every year to two years for both soot buildup and for damage that could allow fire to escape.

Also this morning, Cobb firefighters battled a mattress fire on James Road in Austell, where no injuries were reported, Boyd said.
