Gun Safety Course Likely To Continue

Officials with the Powder Springs Police Department say that residents can expect at least one more such offering sometime in the near future.

Despite a lower turnout at its second gun safety course of the year, officials with the Powder Springs Police Department say that residents can expect at least one more such offering sometime in the near future.

The department held its first course of the year in February, which drew an estimated 65 to 70 attendees. But the same course offered on May 21 only brought in close to 20 attendees.

“There could be a multitude of reasons for the lower number of participants at our last seminar, but it was very well worth our time,” Police Chief Charlie Sewell said. “At the end of the day, the main goal of this program is to build relationships, inform citizens and save lives as it relates to firearm safety.

“We may consider a different approach for future seminars, but we anticipate at least one more seminar within the next 12 months,” Sewell added.

Other than the cost of paying the instructor, the course does not cost the city any money, Sewell said, adding that he is grateful to Tapp Middle School, which allowed the department to host to both classes.
