Police: Gunshots Lead to School Lockdown

A Powder Springs man faces charges in connection to the incident that led to the school lockdown. Police believe there was no connection to the arrested individual and the school.

According to Maj. Matt Boyd of the Powder Springs Police Department, the male arrested in the incident was 22-year-old Darrin Alfonzo Tate of Powder Springs. 

Tate was charged with obstruction of law enforcement officers and VGCSA (Violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act) possession with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a public school.

Original report - Tuesday, 7:04 p.m.

An elementary school was locked down as a precaution Tuesday afternoon after gunshots were heard in a neighborhood nearby.

According to Maj. Matt Boyd, spokesman for the Powder Springs Police Department, the shots were heard coming from a neighborhood near Powder Springs Elementary. Once officers arrived to the area, they found a male running along railroad tracks nearby. After a short foot chase, officers detained the male and arrested him on a charge of drug possession.

The school lockdown was lifted soon thereafter, and classes resumed as normal until the end of the school day.

Boyd said that the incident is still under investigation, but officials currently believe there to be no association between the gunshots and the school.
