Teen Powder Springs Driver Survives Fatal Wreck

A 19-year-old Powder Springs man, Joseph Kirkland, was uninjured this afternoon when the car he was driving was involved in a fatal three-car crash on Dallas Highway.

The 45-year-old passenger in another vehicle, Kimberly Michelle Nichols of Dallas, was pronounced dead at from the injuries she sustained in the wreck.

According to preliminary reports from , the 16-year-old driver of a red 2002 Volkswagen Cabriolet that was eastbound on Dallas Highway tried to turn left onto northbound Old Hamilton Road about 1:46 p.m. A large white truck directly in front of the Volkswagen was in the same intersection turning left onto southbound Casteel Road from westbound Dallas Highway.

Witnesses told police that as the Volkswagen was completing the turn, it was struck in the passenger door by a red 1999 Mustang traveling west on Dallas Highway. Kirkland's car, a gray 2008 Mazda 3, was also traveling west and wound up hitting the back of the Volkswagen.

Police did not identify the Volkswagen's driver, who was sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said charges against him are expected in juvenile court.

Police identified the driver of the Mustang as Karen Lynn Flury, 40, of Dallas. She complained of injury and was taken by ambulance to WellStar Kennestone Hospital.

Investigators are hoping to identify the driver of the white truck, who drove away from the scene. Anyone with information about the truck or the accident is asked to call 770-499-3987.
