City to Purchase $5,600 in Oils

The Powder Springs City Council is expected to approve on Monday a $5,672 purchase of hydraulic and motor oil for city vehicles.

The largest portion of the purchase—$2,333—will go toward the hydraulic oil for the city’s sanitation trucks, Director Greg Ramsey said at Wednesday’s work session. 

He said the rest of the money is for motor oil for other city vehicles, including , water, sewer, and code enforcement. 

The city has been purchasing from The McPherson Companies for “as many years as everyone in the shop can recall,” Ramsey said. “And they’re actually the only one that supplies the brand (Castrol) that we’ve been using for quite some time.”

He said Castrol is especially good for the “high-performance vehicles” needed for the police force. 

The oils are typically bought “in stages,” Ramsey said, but “it just so happens we’re running out of everything at the same time.”

And since the oils cost more than the $5,000 purchasing threshold, the purchase needed council approval, the director said.

“You’re not totally out, are you?” Councilwoman Rosalyn Neal joked.

“If we were completely out, we would buy some small portions,” Ramsey said. “This is enough to last for 12 to 18 months, so we’re OK for the next few days.”
