Millage Rate, Backyard Chickens on Powder Springs’ Agenda Tonight

Powder Springs leaders could set tonight the city’s millage rate for the 2014 fiscal year.

Tonight’s meeting of the Powder Springs City Council will feature a public hearing on the millage rate, after which the council could take a vote to set the rate.

A document showing the 2013 tax digest and five-year history of levy is attached to this article in PDF form. Over the last five years, the millage rate has stayed put at 8.5 mills.

The council could also consider a request from resident Lorena Litares to keep chickens in her backyard. Litares is requesting a variance from the minimum lot size of 5 acres required to maintain poultry as pets or food source for eggs. The city’s planning and zoning commissioners last month recommended that city officials deny the variance application.

In addition to Litares’ request, councilmen are set to consider amending city code that allows for backyard chickens under certain conditions.

The backyard chicken issue is not new to Cobb communities. In February, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted 3-2 in favor of a code amendment that allows Cobb residents to get variance approval from the Board of Zoning Appeals for backyard poultry on lots less than 2 acres in size.

A PDF of the agenda is attached to this article.

The council will meet at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at 4484 Marietta St.
