Small Unemployment Increases for Cobb, Douglas

As those out of work in the state grew slightly, so did the numbers for the two counties.

Preliminary unadjusted data from the Georgia Department of Labor shows slight increases in unemployment for both Cobb and Douglas counties in August.

Cobb’s rate—9.6—was one-tenth of a percentage higher than July’s 9.5. In August, 35,375 people in Cobb’s labor force of 368,830 were out of work, the data shows.

August’s rate is better than during the month last year, though, when it was at 9.9.

The preliminary data puts Douglas’s unemployment for August at 11.4 percent, up three-tenths of a point from July’s 11.1. In August, 7,337 people in the county’s work force of 56,901 were out of work, the data shows.

Douglas's rate for August 2010 was 11.

The rate in metro Atlanta increased to 10.4 percent in August, up one-tenth of a percentage point from 10.3 in July. A year ago, it also was 10.4 percent.

That rate increased due to more layoffs in construction, trade, administrative and support services, and accommodation and food services, officials say.

The lowest area rates, 7.8 percent, were recorded in Athens and Warner Robins, while the highest, 12.7 percent, was in the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha area near Dublin.

For the state in August, 482,321 people in the workforce were jobless, putting Georgia’s unemployment rate at 10.2—the same as it was in August 2010. In July of this year, that number was at 10.1.

August marked the 49th consecutive month Georgia has exceeded the national unemployment rate, which is currently 9.1 percent, unchanged from July.
