Sunday Alcohol Sales a No Go in Powder Springs

It looks like wine and beer coolers in Powder Springs will stay dark on Sundays for now.

Sunday alcohol sales was on the agenda for a Powder Springs City Council workshop Wednesday. It was discussed ... briefly.

Mayor Pat Vaughn said she had gotten inquiries from three residents on the issue.

The governor has signed legislation that would allow counties and cities to vote on Sunday alcohol sales.

Several local cities and counties have decided to put the issue on a ballot in the fall.

But in Powder Springs, it looks like a dead issue for now.

"If they want to buy liquor, they can do it on Saturday," Powder Springs Councilwoman Rosalyn Neal said.

Vaughn told members of the council she had promised she would bring it up for discussion. But nobody else had anything to say, and the council moved on.

The new legislation, if on a ballot and approved, would allow alcohol sales in liquor stores, grocery stores and convenience stores. Restaurants are already able to sell alcohol by the drink on Sundays in many places.

Georgia is one of only three states that ban packaged alcohol sales, including beer, wine and hard liquor, on Sunday.
