A Fine Afternoon of Art from Hillgrove

The school's bands, orchestra, chorus and theater students will be performing in Marietta on Sunday.

"Performing for the Dream: An Afternoon of Fine Arts" will be held Sunday afternoon in The Earl Smith Strand Theatre on the Marietta Square.

All ages are welcome to view the visual and performing arts presented by students.

The event is a fundraising effort, with proceeds going toward the school's fine arts, academics and athletic programs, said Natalie Feller, co-treasurer of The Hillgrove High School Foundation, a nonprofit part of the Cobb Schools Foundation.

Through this event, the foundation hopes to be well on its way to raising the $75,000 needed to complete the school's new stadium, Feller said.

"We hope to raise more money through what we hope will become an annual event than we did through smaller fundraisers we have held since the foundation was formed last summer," she said.

Hillgrove parent Karen Acton said the school's fine arts are "a vital part of Hillgrove."

"A lot of students would miss the fine arts program if it wasn't available," she said.

This event will begin at 2 p.m. and conclude by 5 p.m. Performances will be given by the school's bands, orchestra, chorus and theater students. Also, original works of art by students will be on display.

Of particular note are the achievements of the school's orchestra members, who have been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City, Feller said.

Also in the spring in New York City, Hillgrove senior Taylor Saxton will perform her prize-winning monologue in a national competition on Broadway.

She won first place in the region literary competition for portraying Vera from August Wilson's play "Seven  Guitars."

A Silent Auction also will be held, and light hors d'oeuvres will be served.

Free parking will be available across from The Strand in the Cobb County government parking deck.

At $25 each, tickets are available at The Strand Box Office at 117 North Park Square or at the front office of Hillgrove High at 4165 Luther Ward Road.
