Four Powder Springs Schools Top State CRCT Averages

And on the other side of the Douglas County border, Sweetwater Elementary's fourth grade class improved its math score by 15.2 percent.

, and elementary schools each topped the state average on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests.

The third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students at the schools were the only elementary students in the Powder Springs-Lithia Springs area to surpass the state average in all five of the CRCT content areas.

The CRCT measures third- to eighth-grade students’ abilities in reading, English/language arts, math, science and social studies.

Students in third, fifth and eighth grade must meet or exceed the grade requirements on the CRCT in reading to advance, according to state law. Fifth- and eighth-grade students also need to meet or exceed expectations on the CRCT in mathematics to move on to the next grade.

third graders improved their math score 10.7 percent to 70 percent meeting or exceeding the standard. Powder Springs scores decreased in reading, science and social studies, which was the largest of the three, falling 9.8 percent to 63.2 percent.

Lithia Springs' third graders raised their English/language arts score 7.5 percent to 80 percent. ’s class of the same grade saw its reading score drop 7.2 percent to 76.9 percent.

Compton’s fourth graders bettered their math score by 17.1 percent to 69.7 percent meeting or exceeding the standard. 

The fourth graders at in Lithia Springs boasted a 15.2 percent improvement in math to 74.5 percent meeting or exceeding the standard. The class also topped its English/language arts score by 5.1 percent to 79.4 percent.

Compton fifth graders raised their average science score by 19 percent to 50.6 percent.

Annette Winn’s fifth graders bettered their average math score by 10.6 percent to 81.3 percent.

Lovinggood Middle sixth graders improved their science score by 8.1 percent to 94 percent meeting or exceeding the standard. students’ social studies score fell by 15.4 percent to 48 percent.

sixth graders saw their social studies score plummet 9 percent to 43.7 percent meeting or exceeding the standard. Turner is the lone Douglas County middle school located in Lithia Springs.

Tapp seventh graders raised their science score 7 percent to 81.4 percent. Turner’s seventh-grade class boosted their math score by 14.7 percent to 82.4 percent and their reading score by 6.4 percent to 90 percent.

Lovinggood eighth graders improved their math score 9.9 percent to 93.1 percent, while Tapp’s math score fell 6.8 percent to 76.4 percent.

Turner eighth graders raised their English/language art and math scores by more than 8.5 percent with scores of 93.3 percent and 63.3 percent, respectively. But the class’ social studies score plummeted 27.2 percent to 43.3 percent.
