Hillgrove Principal Warns Against 'Body Surfing'

In a message to those subscribed to the school's PTSA email, Robert Shaw says the behavior of some students at Tuesday's Harrison game "was simply unacceptable and will not be tolerated."

Dear Hillgrove Family:

On the evening of January 31, 2012 at the v. Harrison basketball game, the students in our student section participated in “body surfing” a young man in the bleachers. If you are not familiar "body surfing," this is when a student is hoisted to the top of the crowd and passed among the students until he makes it to the top of the bleachers.

In this case, the student fell on top of another female student (neither student was hurt) and after this, several groups of students began pushing, shoving and falling into each other.

At this point, I made the decision to clear the student section. The reason for my decision is that nothing is more important than the safety of the students. Our students are normally well behaved, and I was disappointed and embarrassed by this behavior.

Our students should understand that coming to any sporting event at Hillgrove is a privilege. I certainly want our kids to have fun, cheer and support our team.  However, the behavior exhibited by some of our students was simply unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

As always, I appreciate your support.

Sincerely:
