McEachern Girls Seek 2nd State Crown in 3 Years Saturday

Junior guard Te'a Cooper was named the Girls Metro Player of the Year this week, while Lady Indians' coach Phyllis Arthur was honored with the Bobby Cremins Girls Coach of the Year Award.

Two Cobb coaches and 13 county players were honored with this week’s announcement of the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s 2014 High School Basketball Awards.

McEachern junior guard Te’a Cooper was named the Girls Metro Player of the Year, while Lady Indians' coach Phyllis Arthur was honored with the Bobby Cremins Girls Coach of the Year Award.

Caliya Robinson was named to the All Metro first team and Taylor Gordon to the second team for McEachern, which will be playing Saturday night for the Class AAAAAA state title. The Lady Indians will face Archer in a 7 p.m. game at the Macon Centreplex.

A win for McEachern, which won the title in 2012, would make it the first girls program in the county to win multiple state crowns. Here’s a preview of the McEachern-Archer game.

They are one of three Cobb teams shooting to cut down the nets on Saturday in Macon. The Whitefield Academy boys face St. Francis at 12:45 p.m. for the Class A private school title, while the Wheeler boys will take on Tift County for the Class AAAAAA championship at 8:45 p.m.

Whitefield’s Eric Lockett was an All-Metro Atlanta Boys first team selection from the Atlanta Tipoff Club, while Wheeler’s Jaylen Brown was a second team pick and the Wildcats' Avery Patterson was named to the third team.

The Bobby Cremins Boys Coach of the Year Award went to Allatoona High School head coach Markus Hood.

All-Metro Atlanta Boys Second Team: Kyle Castlin of Hillgrove; Daniel Fowler of Allatoona.

All-Metro Atlanta Girls Honorable Mention: Nikira Goings of Osborne.

All-Metro Atlanta Boys Honorable Mention: Kendall Crute of North Cobb Christian; Ty Hudson of Pebblebrook; Elijah Weems of Walton.
