McEachern Receiver Commits to Maryland

Amba Etta-Tawo plans to take his height and speed to the ACC in 2012.

 wide receiver Amba Etta-Tawo announced this week that he will play college football for the University of Maryland starting in 2012.

Etta-Tawo, a senior, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday that he chose the Terrapins over fellow Atlantic Coast Conference school Virginia among about 10 scholarship offers.

Etta-Tawo is also a track star who has run the 100-meter dash in less than 11 seconds and was part of McEachern’s .

That speed helped earn him a spot on 24/7 Sports’ spring list of 10 under-the-radar Georgia football recruits. That article also cited his height (6-foot-3) and good ball skills.

Etta-Tawo chose Maryland because its offense fits him, the AJC reported.

Maryland is making a big recruiting push in Georgia, The Washington Post reported. He’s the fourth Georgia player to commit to new Terps coach Randy Edsall for 2012, including fellow wide receiver AJ Liddell of nearby .

McEachern Coach Kyle Hockman said Edsall attracts players by being a father-figure type, the Marietta Daily Journal said.

Etta-Tawo started as a sophomore and junior for the Indians and last year caught 33 passes for 667 yards and six touchdowns, the MDJ said.

Maryland football fans generally reacted positively to the news of the commitment.

Etta-Tawo’s spoken commitment is not binding. Until he signs a national letter of intent, he’s free to change his mind. The signing period is in February.
