Powder Springs Students Can Compete for Scholarship

From American Legion Post No. 294:

High school students in Powder Springs are invited by Post No. 294 of the American Legion to compete in the annual American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program. 

All students of grades 9-12 are eligible to compete for scholarship monies by preparing an oration about some phase of the Constitution of the United States, emphasizing the duties and obligations of a citizen to the United States government. 

The prepared oration must be 8-10 minutes in length. At the Post level, three awards will be given: 1st place - $150, 2nd place - $100, and 3rd place $50. 

The 1st place winner will go on to compete at the District competition where greater awards are given and the winner can compete at the area and state contests.  

In addition to the awards by winners of the various elimination rounds of competition college scholarships of $18,000, $16,000, and$14,000 will be awarded to the first through third places in the national finals. 

Each state winner who competes in the national rounds will be awarded a minimum of a $1,500 scholarship. The top three orators who have won all previous rounds of the contest will vie for the top honors in the national contest to be held in April 2014 at Indianapolis, IN.
