Three Lithia Springs Schools Miss AYP

Lithia Springs High, Turner Middle and Sweetwater Elementary are among the 12 public schools in Douglas that helped lead to the county overall falling short of Adequate Yearly Progress.

Three of the five pubic schools in Lithia Springs were among the 12 in the Douglas County School System that failed to meet Adequate Yearly Progress, helping lead to the county overall falling short of AYP.

Those three are , and , according to reports released today from the Georgia Department of Education.

To pass the academic performance portion, a school must attain the Annual Measurable Objectives for reading, English and math for the Criterion-Reference Competency Tests, or those subjects for the Georgia High School Graduation Test. Second indicator is based on attendance for primary, elementary and middle schools, and graduation rates for high schools.

Sweetwater and Turner missed it because of academic performance.

Repeatedly missing AYP can lead to schools being forced to pay for outside tutoring for students and allowing students to transfer.

Out of the 33 schools in the district, 21 did make AYP, including and .

AYP is a series of annual performance goals set by the state for each school district and school, as well as for the state as a whole, according to the Department of Education’s website. By participating in Title I, states must commit themselves to the goal of the federal No Child Left Behind Act: that by 2014 all students will be proficient in reading, English and math, as determined by state assessments.

Title I is a voluntary federal program that provides more than $11 billion to participating states to help educate low-income children, the website says.
