Braving the Winter at Sweetwater Park

Hikes and classes are scheduled throughout January and February.

The winter cold isn't stopping from hosting a wide array of hikes and classes in the coming weeks and months. The diversity of activities is large, and there is something for seemingly everyone.

Ruins to Rapids Full Moon Hike

When: Jan. 20, Feb. 18, March 19 (each from 7 to 9 p.m.)

Cost: $5 plus $5 for parking

Rating: Moderately difficult

The hike is 1.5 miles long and ventures into the ruins of the New Manchester textile mill, dating back to the Civil War. Hikers will also get to see the rapids of Sweetwater Creek. The park asks that hikers bring a flashlight and sturdy shoes. Children under 6 years old and dogs aren't allowed.

Winter Splendor Hike

When: Jan. 15, Feb. 5, Feb. 27 (each from 1 to 4 p.m.)

Cost: $5 plus $5 for parking

Rating: Moderate

The 3.5-mile hike will lead visitors to a more secluded area of the park, including the Yellow Trail, which isn't accessible by bridge.

Green Building Tour

When: Jan. 16, March 6 (each from 2 to 3:30 p.m.)

Cost: $5 plus $5 for parking

Sweetwater's Visitor Center and Museum is extremely environmentally friendly, according to the Georgia State Parks website. Visitors will learn about sustainability and making a building environmentally friendly.

Skins and Skulls Wildlife ID Class

When: Jan. 15, Feb. 12 (each from 2 to 4 p.m.)

Cost: $5 plus $5 for parking

Beginners are invited to attend this class, which teaches the ins and outs of identifying wildlife. The class is held indoors at the park's Interpretive Center.

Wilderness Survival Class

When: Feb. 26, April 10 (each from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.)

Cost: $10 plus $5 for parking

Outdoor enthusiasts of all ages are invited to this class, which covers both basic and advanced survival techniques in the wilderness. The class will give instructions on how to build a fire and emergency shelter, navigate, and pack for survival. Visitors are asked to bring lunch and to register beforehand because there is a limit to class size.
