Harrison football fans apparently didn’t want fellow county team Hillgrove to be the only one to earn “Team of the Week” honors this season.
After having only 2.4 percent of the vote as of early Tuesday in Fox 5 Atlanta’s “High 5 Sports Team of the Week” contest, Hoyas fans cast their votes online and via text to push their team past the North Forsyth Raiders, which had 70 percent of the vote going into Tuesday.
When voting ended at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Harrison had 158,949 votes to North Forsyth’s 142,141.
“The Hoyas had to vote like crazy to get past the North Forsyth Raiders, who hung in there right up to the end of the voting period,” wrote the High 5 Sports staff in the announcement of Harrison’s win.
More than 309,000 votes were cast in all. Harrison’s vote total surpassed the total number of votes cast in High 5’s first “Team of the Week” contest of the season, which was won by fellow West Cobb team Hillgrove. Hillgrove also was a come-from-behind winner, but had started the last day of the contest in second place and not far from the top spot.
The Atlanta station will be celebrating with the Hoyas this Thursday morning on “Good Day Atlanta” and will be giving the team a trophy to commemorate the honor as well as T-shirts for the players.
Harrison later this week could receive recognition from another Atlanta TV station, as it is among the nominees for this Friday’s “Viewer’s Choice” game. The Hoyas are hosting North Cobb, and the matchup is one of seven games up for the honor.
Return to West Cobb Patch for updates.
Another West Cobb high school could bring home “Team of the Week” honors, but only if their fans put up enough online votes today.
Harrison is one of five nominees for the Fox 5 Atlanta’s “High 5 Sports Team of the Week” for Thursday, Sept. 26. Other teams in the running are the Etowah Eagles, Milton Eagles, North Forsyth Raiders and the Peachtree Ridge Lions.
As of early Tuesday, Harrison was a distant fourth in the standings, with only 2.4 percent of the vote. North Forsyth led with 70 percent. The winning team will earn a “Team of the Week” trophy as well as T-shirts for the players.
Voting ends today at 3 p.m.
Hoyas fans can follow this link to vote for their team online; there is no limit to voting online. Votes for Harrison can also be sent via text message by sending a text to 78015 with the keyword “TEAM 2” in the text; voting by text is limited to three votes per hour, per person.
If Harrison can pull of the upset, it will follow in the footsteps of Hillgrove, which won Fox 5’s “Team of the Week” honor to start the season.
Harrison is also among the nominees for this Friday’s “Viewer’s Choice” game. The Hoyas are hosting North Cobb, and the matchup is one of seven games up for the honor.
