The final vote totals had Hillgrove with 65,504 votes to Paulding County’s 63,783—a difference of just over 1,700 votes, according to a report from High 5 Sports.
“Our first Team of the Week vote of 2013 was a wild one! After a back-and-forth battle that lasted right up to the final minutes, the Hillgrove Hawks are officially our Team of the Week!” the article stated.
Hillgrove and Paulding County were the only two teams truly in contention throughout the contest, as only one of the other three competitors were able to draw more than 10,000 votes. In all, 144,949 votes were cast online and via text message.
The Atlanta station will be celebrating with the Hawks this Thursday morning on “Good Day Atlanta.”

They say “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over,” and fans of the
Hillgrove Hawks may have taken those words of wisdom to heart.
Despite trailing behind the Paulding County High School Patriots during the last hour of voting, Hillgrove’s faithful showed support for their team to give the Hawks the most votes in the Fox 5 Atlanta’s “High 5 Sports Team of the Week” competition by the time voting closed at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Fans voted by casting as many online ballots as they wished and by texting as many as three times per hour.
Results posted on the competition website showed that Hillgrove received 45.2 percent of the votes compared to Paulding County’s 44 percent. Other teams in the running were the Johnson-Gainesville Knights, Monroe Area Purple Hurricanes and the Westlake Lions.
Hillgrove will be the “Team of the Week” for this Thursday and will earn a trophy to commemorate the honor as well as T-shirts for the players.
The Hillgrove Hawks need your online votes through mid-afternoon today to earn an honor from an Atlanta TV station.
Hillgrove is one of five nominees for the Fox 5 Atlanta’s “High 5 Sports Team of the Week” for Thursday, Sept. 5. Other teams in the running are the Johnson-Gainesville Knights, Monroe Area Purple Hurricanes, Paulding County Patriots and the Westlake Lions.
As of early Tuesday, Paulding County held a slight lead over Hillgrove, with the two schools together holding the lion’s share of the votes. The winning team will earn a “Team of the Week” trophy as well as T-shirts for the players.
Voting ends today at 3 p.m.
