Will Chipper Go to Cooperstown?

If the longtime Brave stays true to last week's announcement of retiring after this season, he'll become eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2017.

Braves third baseman Larry Wayne "Chipper" Jones announced last week that he will retire after this season.

"I was anxious to get this announcement out and get this over with so that there is some finality to it," the 39-year-old switch-hitter told MLB.com. "I'm tired of the speculative questions as to when it's going to happen. This way, we get it out in the open. It's final. It's definite."

Two days after the announcement, Braves general manager Frank Wren said that Jones will undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee and is expected to miss the first six games.

With players first becoming eligible for the Hall of Fame five years after retiring, Jones will be on the 2017 Baseball Writers' Association of America ballot.
