Batting to Battle Breast Cancer

The third-annual Strike Out Breast Cancer youth baseball tournament, featuring teams from across the metro Atlanta area, continues Saturday in Powder Springs and Austell.

Their jerseys may be different colors, but teams from all across the metro Atlanta area will be playing for pink this weekend.

In all, 56 teams from Cherokee, Cobb, Douglas, Forsyth, Gwinnett, Paulding and other nearby counties are converging on Clarkdale Park in Austell and Powder Springs Park for the third-annual Strike Out Breast Cancer youth baseball tournament.

“This tournament means a lot to the participating teams somehow. Their lives have been impacted by breast cancer or cancer,” said Angela Tillison, one of the tournament’s directors, who added that the tournament is twice as big as it was last year and featured just 17 teams in its inaugural year.

The tournament began Friday but continues today and Sunday in both parks, with games set to run from about 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day.

Fans can get into either park for free; concessions and Strike Out Breast Cancer gear will be for sale. Proceeds from those sales, team fees and sponsorships will be donated to the It’s the Journey nonprofit to fund breast cancer awareness, education, early detection and more.

In addition to the action on the field, Saturday’s festivities at Clarkdale Park will feature an autograph signing with Atlanta Braves star Jordan Schafer from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. For a $20 donation, fans will be given an autograph and photo opportunity with the outfielder.

Tillison said tournament volunteers are welcome throughout the weekend, as officials will be hard at work from 7 a.m. to midnight both days. Volunteers can aid with concessions, field preparations or other errands.

Sponsorships are also welcome, Tillison added, and start with umpire sponsorships for $25 a game.
